BLACK MAMBA SNAKE

The black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis), also called the common black mamba or black-mouthed mamba,is the longest venomous snake in Africa, averaging around 2.5 to 3.2 meters (8.2 to 10 ft) in length, and sometimes growing to lengths of 4.45 meters (14.6 ft).Its name is derived from the black colouration inside the mouth rather than the actual colour of its scales which varies from dull yellowish-green to a gun-metal grey. It is the fastest snake in the world, capable of moving at 4.32 to 5.4 metres per second (16–20 km/h, 10–12 mph). It's also a very "notorious" snake that's feared throughout the world and it generally has a very bad reputation for being very aggressive, explosive, and highly venomous, and many snake experts have cited this species as both the world's deadliest and most aggressive species, noting tendency to actively attack without provocation (B. Johnson, July 13, 2000; Hunter, 1998).One expert even calls this species "death incarnate".Although they are among the world's ten most venomous land snakes, and when threatened or cornered they do often become very explosive[6] and fiercely aggressive, they are still often given mythical status and many myths, legends, and stories about this species still abound.

Elizabth Taylor.

Simply Gorgeous

Though she was a terrific actress who aspired to be more than just a pretty face, the screen legend was, in fact, one of the screen's great beauties.

Bruce Lee.

The martial artist's sudden death on July 20, 1973, was not going to be easy to explain. Lee was, after all, so fit, so vital and so young—just 32. Any number of theories abounded, including marijuana-induced brain swelling. Following an inquest, coroner officials in Hong Kong settled on death by "misadventure," meaning accident and/or a possible bad reaction to headache medicine. The official story did not quell talk of everything from a conspiracy to a curse.

"Sparks Fly"

It's a good thing Taylor Swift doesn't mind being called a role model. But we don't think it's just impressionable young girls who should be looking up to the superstar country crossover—her fellow artists might want to take a page or two from the ol' Swift book, as well.

Lesson No. 1: how to put on a show.

E! News has obtained an exclusive full performance clip of "Sparks Fly" from the teen dream's forthcoming concert DVD, Speak Now World Tour—Live, out next Tuesday, and let's just say, it's pretty clear that this girl isn't just showing the world she's on top of her game. She's telling the world, game on.

Sure, she may be a country girl at heart, but she's pulling moves worthy of any rock goddess. So go ahead and watch. We dare you not to sing along. Or at the very least, feel 16 again.

Demi Moore Get From.......

Remember when Demi Moore made headlines with her then-record $12 million payday for Striptease?

Well, that was 15 years ago.

Ashton Kutcher's career, meanwhile, took off about two years after that when he was cast on That '70s Show—and he's been making bank ever since from movies, TV residuals, his production company, etc. And that was before he became the highest paid sitcom star overnight when he landed Two and a Half Men.

So that means...Demi wins?!

"We all know that during their marriage, he probably made lots more money than her, and if there is no prenup, she is entitled to 50 percent of whatever he accumulated during marriage," certified family law specialist Lisa Helfend Meyer tells E! News.
Though she filed for divorce from Bruce Willis in Idaho, where they had a home, Moore will almost certainly file for divorce in California, a no-fault state where the divorce process can be completed in six months and the spousal support laws are more liberal.

"Under California law, whatever you acquire together, whether it is a dollar or a hundred million dollars, you split it in half," Meyer says.

Not that Moore isn't making any money on her own. A Forbes analyst put her 2011 earnings in the $5 million range. But Kutcher has made an estimated $7 million from Two and a Half Men alone this year, not counting all the other pots he has a spoon in.

"When she was married to Bruce, she was at the height of her career making around $20 million a picture, and when she was married to Ashton it was the exact opposite," says Meyer, adding that California has the "highest support orders in the world."

"You are roughly going to pay 30 to 40 percent of your income toward spousal support," she notes. "Assuming he makes $10 million a year, that is a lot of money."

And assuming Moore and Kutcher didn't sign a prenuptial agreement when they tied the knot in 2005, which isn't an assumption that anyone's making at this time.

Meanwhile, Meyer doesn't expect a drawn-out, public court battle.

If he were smart, I think he would want to do this quietly," she says of Kutcher. "He doesn't want everything that he has [allegedly] done to be disclosed in the media. Given the fact that he is on Two and Half Men and that Charlie Sheen preceded him, I don't think he will want to sully his reputation. He has endorsement contracts with places like Nikon. I think he is going to do this as quietly as he can."

And as quick as they can, too.

"He's not going to want to write monthly checks," Meyer suspects. "He will probably just say, 'Here is $50 million' and let's call it a day.'"

Moore announced yesterday that she planned to end her marriage after six years "with great sadness and a heavy heart."

'Vampire Chronicles.

Stephenie Meyer's popular series, saying her vampires would "feel sorry" for ones that sparkle in the sun.
Anne Rice, author of the Vampire Chronicles series which included the book-turned-movie Interview With the Vampire, took to her Facebook page Oct. 28 to air her grievances with another living dead author, The Twilight Saga's Stephenie Meyer.

PHOTOS: The Evolution of Film Vampires

"Lestat and Louie feel sorry for vampires that sparkle in the sun," said Rice, referring to her popular characters (who were portrayed by Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in the 1994 movie). "They would never hurt immortals who choose to spend eternity going to high school over and over again in a small town ---- anymore than they would hurt the physically disabled or the mentally challenged. My vampires possess gravitas. They can afford to be merciful."

The statements, which aren't Rice's first on the popular Twilight series' Cullen clan (in 2009 she said the series was "made for 12 year olds" and "does not entirely make sense"), quickly spurred a Facebook comment-a-thon, as of Tuesday, 1,990 users had expressed their opinion on the author's dig.

'Breaking Dawn Part 1': How Will It End?

And, while many agreed with her, proclaiming "Team Anne Rice!" and bashing the Twilight films as the "worst vampire movies ever made," many also took issue with her attack.

"Ms Rice really shouldn't throw stones, after she allowed her masterpiece novels to be turned into the most God awful vampire movies in history," said Scott Astley.

While Rachel Dehlinger wrote, "It must be hard to see someone else excelling in an area where your popularity is beginning to fade".

Rice was eventually move to comment again in an attempt to clarify, saying, "there's plenty of room for a little humour in talking about the various interpretations."

She isn't the only author to take a stab at Meyer. In 2009, Stephen King said, "Stephenie Meyer can't write worth a darn." Adding, "She's not very good."

Meyer has yet to comment on the attacks.

The only movies to post bigger first-day bows in France were Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn and Harry Potter and the Dealthy Hallows: Part 2.

The first screenings at the Le Grand Rex theater in Paris were sold out, with screaming fans drowning out the dialogue throughout the movie.

Breaking Dawn also came in No. 1 in Italy, where it grossed at least $2.3 million (Summit reports that numbers are stilll coming in from distributors).

In Belgium, Breaking Dawn dethroned Tintin, grossing $786K, or nearly 64% of all business.

Breaking Dawn grossed an impressive $1.3 million in midnight grosses in Australia. In Sweden, the penultimate pic in the blockbuster franchise grossed $757K.

The movie begins its North American assault at midnight Friday, as well as continuing to rollout overseas.

'X Factor'

The Top 10 finalist says show stylists scored the discontinued tee direct from Jay-Z, but did Rene consider what happens if he wins the $5 million prize and joins the 1 percent by default?

Being a Top 10 finalist on X Factor has its privileges. Just ask Chris Rene, who managed to get his hands on a Rocawear Occupy Wall Street shirt for his performance of Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry” on Wednesday night. despite the fact that the Jay-Z-owned company pulled the tees from its website and retailers amid a storm of controversy.

PHOTOS: The Scene at Occupy Wall Street

At issue: the idea that the line was created to support Occupy Wall Street but would not share profits with the thousands of protesters who’ve set up camp in parks and near government buildings for the better part of two months.

Said one such critic: "Jay-Z, as talented as he is, has the political sensibility of a hood rat and is a scrotum. To attempt to profit off of the first important social moment of 50 years with an overpriced piece of cotton is an insult to the fight for economic civil rights known as #occupywallstreet."

PHOTOS: The Scene at Occupy Los Angeles

Rene scored the shirt through the show’s stylist team, led by June Ambrose, who informed the finalist that it came from Jay-Z. “I’m so honored, I can barely say anything,” Rene told the Hollywood Reporter following his performance.

As for the message? He too feels solidarity with Occupy protesters, but what happens if he wins the $5 million prize and becomes part of the 1 percent? Said Rene: “I'd be one of those clowns, but I would be helping the 99%. There's always a solution. It's what you do with your money and with your heart. Because actions speak louder than words, and in life, it's the most important thing.”

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has given birth to a baby girl, her husband Abhishek Bachchan announced on Twitter on Wednesday.

While the baby's father just said "it's a girl", her proud grandfather Amitabh Bachchan, the veteran actor and head of Bollywood's most famous family, could barely contain his joy.

"I AM DADA (grandfather) to the cutest baby girl!!" the 69-year-old Bachchan tweeted.

No further details were immediately available.

Rai, 38, a former Miss World, has been married to actor Abhishek Bachchan for more than four years and the star couple had been fending off baby rumours for months before the pregnancy was confirmed in June.

The Bollywood actress had been expected to give birth to her first child in November, and the Indian media followed her pregnancy obsessively.

She was admitted to a Mumbai hospital on Monday night.

Rai, who often features on "most beautiful" lists, won the Miss World crown in 1994. She went on to build a successful Bollywood career with hits such as "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" and "Devdas".

She has also worked in Hollywood films such as "The Pink Panther 2" and is a regular at the Cannes film festival.

This is the third grandchild for Amitabh Bachchan. His daughter Shweta has two children.

George Clooney

If the 2011 Oscar race needed to be described in one word, I’d choose, “Uncertainty.” Despite strong showings by a handful of films – from “The Help” and “The Artist” to Bennett Miller’s “Moneyball” – no film has grabbed the proverbial brass ring and declared itself a frontrunner.

Last year at this time, Oscar pundits were debating “The King’s Speech” versus “The Social Network” (and both films, by this point of the race, had screened for critics). This year? Some are still holding out for the largely unscreened triumverate of “War Horse,” “”Extremely Loud and Dangerously Close” and David Fincher’s “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.”

But George Clooney’s performance in Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants” has stood above the fray from the minute this rewarding drama world premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in September.

“There’s plenty to chew on regarding family connections, heritage, loyalty to one’s location in life, the cycles we go through when confronting death, and the challenge of being a stable force during trying times,” I wrote from the Toronto International Film Festival after seeing Payne’s film. “But Clooney’s an outstanding guide on this journey, and I’m confident we’ll see his name in the Best Actor race as the marathon continues.”

And so we reach the point where you can see what so many of us have been talking and writing about for months. “The Descendants” opens in theaters. It’s a special film. An honest film. It addresses personal issues, and offsets them with Payne’s quirky humor. And it boasts a jaw-dropping performance by Clooney, who somehow ignores every trick in his acting arsenal yet still wins our heart with a vulnerable side that solidifies him as one of our strongest working actors.

If you ask him, though, he’s just lucky.

That was Clooney’s message when he accepted the Hollywood Actor Award for his “Descendants” performance last month. It’s an extremely humble speech, one laced with wit and self-awareness. Just like the man, himself.

Here’s exclusive video of Clooney from that gala, as his latest film, “The Descendants,” opens in theaters. Could it be the first of many acceptance speeches he makes as the awards season rolls on?

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber was going to have to take a DNA test to prove he hasn’t fathered a child, but now he is free from that as the paternity suit against him has been dropped.

The accuser has reportedly dropped the suit while her lawyers have withdrawn from her case, states TMZ.

Bieber did plan on taking the DNA test and then suing the accuser and her lawyers.

Bieber has held strong against the claim and been open about it being a false accusation.

Once upon a time, rival Snow White pictures race toward theaters to capture audiences’ attentions with their unique spins on a classic fairy tale. A-list talents – from Julia Roberts to Kristen Stewart – lined up to participate. Which effort would be the fairest of them all?

Days after Universal’s “Snow White and the Huntsman” — starring Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron – revealed its first action-packed trailer, Relativity’s planned “Mirror Mirror” answered with a clip that suggests broad comedy … particularly from its seven dwarves.

We have it below.

In “Mirror,” director Tarsem Singh (“Immortals”) focuses on an Evil (and jealous) Queen (Roberts) who sets out to drain Snow White’s lifeblood through what appears to be Bollywood song-and-dance routines. Armie Hammer and Nathan Lane provide broad comic relief as a prince and royal servant, while Lily Collins of “The Blind Side” plays the maiden Snow White.

Singh’s visual inspiration, according to this clip, falls somewhere between Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam. But the tone of “Mirror Mirror” is completely different than “Huntsman” … and that might be good for both films.

“Mirror Mirror” will be in theaters on March 16, 2012.

Kristen Stewart’s

Kristen Stewart’s wedding dress in ‘Breaking Dawn’ is all anyone can talk about, and now details about making the dress are out.

Carolina Herrera designed the gown and is revealing how long it all took to get it right, states E! News. “I worked on that dress for like six months going back and forth. I still have all the sketches and everything because it was so special,” Herrera revealed.

But as far as reaching a final design, Herrera wanted to stay true to ‘Twilight’: “I got inspiration from the book and descriptions from Stephenie Meyer. You had to really take in consideration the whole story—which was this innocent girl with the first true love of her life. It had to be magical.”

Do you think the dress will be right?

Immortals’ Slays

Adam Sandler’s new holiday family pic “Jack and Jill” opens to $26 million, while Clint Eastwood’s Leonardo DiCaprio starrer “J. Edgar” bows to $11.5 million on the strength of older adults.

Elsewhere, Adam Sandler's family comedy Jack and Jill launched to $26 million, while DreamWorks Animation and Paramount's holdover Puss in Boots folllowed closely with $25.5 million. Box office observers say the final lineup between the two won't be determined until Monday morning.

Jack and Jill, headlining Sandler both in the role of a brother and his twin sister, saw lower opening numbers than usual for the actor, but Sony expects the movie to have strong legs through Thanksgiving. Also starring Al Pacino and Katie Holmes, Jack and Jill came in slightly behind the $27.5 million earned by Sandler's most recent PG film, Bedtime Stories. Most of Sandler’s films are rated PG-13, and open north of $30 million.

FILM REVIEW: Jack and Jill

Jack and Jill opened to a notable $2.5 million in Mexico--the largest opening ever for a Sandler pic.

DreamWorks Animation and Paramount's Puss in Boots remained a worthy opponent in its third weekend, dropping only 23 percent and finishing the frame with a domestic cume of $108.8 million. It was the second Paramount title of the weekend to jump the $100 million mark, with Paranormal Activity 3 being the other (that's pics domestic cume through Sunday is $100.8 million).

Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar biopic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, got off to a solid start for Warner Bros. on the strength of older adults, grossing $11.5 million, in line with Eastwood's other openings.

COVER STORY: The Making of 'J. Edgar'

Immortals--starring Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke, Stephen Dorff, Isabel Lucas, Kellan Lutz, Freida Pinto and Luke Evans--is a critical moment for Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity, which fully financed and produced the tentpole. The movie cost $75 million to make after tax rebates and is a fantasy adventure along the lines of box office hit 300, which opened north of $70 million. Relativity cites the overall soft marketplace for the difference

Heading into the weekend, tracking had suggested a $25 million to $26 million opening weekend for Immortals, but the film overperformed on the strength of fanboys and is the third highest R-rated opening of the year after Hangover Part 2 ($85 million) and Paranormal 3 ($52 million). It’s also the top opening for Relativity since jumping into the distribution game.

"The picture exceeded expectations, and there's no other action-adventure until you get to Christmas, which bodes well," Relativity president of distribution Kyle Davies said.

Males made up 60 percent of Immortals’ audience, while 75 percent was under the age of 35 (the largest chunk, or 39%, were between the ages of 25 and 35). Hispanics made up the largest segment of the audience at 35 percent, followed by Caucasians at 30 percent. The film drew a healthy 66 percent of its grosses from 3D screens.

"Action fans have been staying away, and clearly this movie got those fans," Davies said.

PHOTOS: 'Immortals' Premiere Red Carpet

Immortals opened day and date in 35 territories, including China (through Relativity's co-venture with Skyland), Germany, Italy, the U.K., South Korea, Japan and South Korea.

Immortals, Jack and Jill and J. Edgar all received a B CinemaScore.

As with Immortals, Jack and Jill and J. Edgar are counting on strong legs as Hollywood heads into Thanksgiving.

"I think we're in good shape. No one gets better multiples than Adam Sandler," Sony president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer said.

Families made up 53 percent of the audience for Jack and Jill, which cost $80 million to produce. Bedtime Stories, after opening to $27.5 million domestically, grossed $101. million in North American and $102.8 million internationally for a worldwide cume of $212.9 million.

Warner Bros. says J. Edgar is poised to play well to adults throughout Thanksgiving. A full 94 percent of those going to see the biopic of the legendary F.B.I head were over the age of 25, and 66 percent over the age of 50.

"I opened on this date for a reason," Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said.

The actress-filmmaker has signed with Ilene Feldman at IFA Talent, who also represents Ryan Gosling, among others.

The last time Jolie had acting representation by a talent agency was in 2006, when she was with CAA (a stint that lasted 13 months). In March, she signed with UTA to rep her as a writer and director but not as an actor. She continues to be with her longtime manager Geyer Kosinski at Media Talent Group and attorney Robert Offer of Sloane Offer Weber & Dern.

Sources say IFA will help Jolie, arguably the biggest female star in the world, find roles in smaller, independently financed films, not studio tentpoles or franchises.

Cowboys Star to Judge.

Dallas Cowboys defensive stud Jay Ratliff wants a judge to know ... he's willing to put in the time and the money to be a great father to his newborn son ... but he thinks his baby mama is trying to take advantage of his big, fat bank account.

Ratliff -- a 3-time Pro Bowl nose tackle who recently signed a $40 million contract extension -- was hit with a paternity suit back in April by a woman named Tonitura Kelley, who claimed the NFL star was the father of her then-unborn child.

According to court docs, Ratliff submitted to a paternity test, which revealed a positive match between Jay and the baby. Kelley filed a request for child support ... but sources familiar with the case tell us she's looking for more money than state guidelines provide for.

Jay filed docs saying he wants to be involved in the child's life -- and is making a play for shared custody. He and Tonitura are due back in court in the near future.

Ratliff's rep tells TMZ ... Jay is currently visiting with his son at least 3 times a week ... adding, "Jay's stepped up to become a good father, he loves his child ... and he's letting the judicial system run it's course."

Diet Tips

The keys to healthy eating habits are balance, variety and moderation. In short, eating a wide variety of foods without getting a lot of calories or too much of any single nutrient. The below 10 tips can help you follow a healthy diet while still enjoying the foods you eat.

1. Eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods.

Humans need more than 40 different nutrients for good health, and a single food never supplies them all. Your daily food selection should include bread and other whole-grain products; fruits; vegetables; dairy products; and meat, poultry, fish and other protein foods. The quantity you should eat depends on your calorie needs. Read the Food Guide Pyramid and the Nutrition Facts panel on food labels as handy references.

2. Enjoy plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables.

Surveys show most of us don't eat enough of these nutrition enriched foods. Do you eat 6-11 servings from the bread, rice, cereal and pasta group, 3 of which should be whole grains? Do you eat 2-4 servings of fruit and 3-5 servings of vegetables? If you don't enjoy some of these at first, give them another chance. Look through cookbooks for tasty ways to prepare variety of foods.

3. Maintain a healthy weight.

Your ideal weight depends on many factors including your sex, height, age and heredity. Excess body fat increases your chances for high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, some types of cancer and other illnesses. But being skinny increases your risk for osteoporosis, menstrual irregularities and other health problems. If you're constantly losing and regaining weight, you need to consult a dietitian to help you develop sensible eating habits for successful weight management. Regular exercise is very important to maintaining a healthy weight.

4. Eat moderate portions.

If you keep portion sizes reasonable, it's easier to eat the foods you want and stay healthy. Did you know the recommended serving of cooked meat is 3 ounces, similar in size to a deck of playing cards? A medium piece of fruit is 1 serving and a cup of pasta equals 2 servings. A pint of ice cream contains 4 servings. Refer to the Food Guide Pyramid for information on recommended serving sizes.

5. Eat regular meals.

If you skip meals, it can lead you to be more hungry and will result in overeating. When you're desperately hungry, it's also tempting to forget about good nutrition. Snacking between meals can help curb hunger, but don't eat so much that your snack becomes an entire meal.

Don't eliminate certain foods but try to reduce it. Most people eat for pleasure and nutrition. If your favorite foods are high in fat, salt or sugar, the key to a healthy habit is to eat them in moderation and make sure you eat them not many times a day.

6. Identify major sources of ingredients

You need to identify the major sources of ingredients and make changes in your diet. Adults who eat high-fat meats or whole-milk dairy products at every meal are probably eating too much fat. Read the Nutrition Facts panel on the food label to know how to balance your choices. Skim or low-fat dairy products and lean cuts of meat such as flank steak and beef round can reduce fat intake significantly.

If you love fried chicken, however, you don't have to give it up. But make sure you eat it less often. When dining out, share it with a friend, or ask for a smaller portion.

7. Balance your food choices from time to time.

Not all food items can be "perfect." When selecting food which is high in fat, salt or sugar, chose other foods that are low in these ingredients. If you miss out on any food group one day, make up for it the next day. Your food choices over several days should fit together into a healthy pattern.

8. Know your limitations.

First of all, you need to know what's wrong with your eating habits in order to improve them. Write down everything you eat for three days. Then check your list according to the rest of these tips. Do you add a lot of butter, creamy sauces or salad dressings? It's better to cut back your portions than eliminating a particular food item. Are you eating enough fruits and vegetables? If not, you are missing out on vital nutrients. Include fruits and vegetables in your in your daily diet chart.

9. Make changes gradually.

There is no "magic food" or easy shortcut to a healthy diet. And don't expect to totally revamp your eating habits overnight. Changing too much, too fast can get in the way of success. Begin to remedy excesses or deficiencies with modest changes that can add up to positive, lifelong eating habits. For instance, if you don't like the taste of skim milk, try low-fat. Eventually you may find you like skim, too.

10. Foods are not good or bad.

Select foods based on your eating patterns, not whether any individual food is "good" or "bad." Don't feel guilty if you love apple pie, potato chips, chocolate candy bars or ice cream. Eat moderately, and choose other foods to provide the balance and variety. This is vital for good health.

A hot dog

Mickey, make me a combo, will ya?" yells Coney Dog owner Mike Binder at a grill cook from his table midway across his bustling West Hollywood restaurant. Then he flashes a broad grin. "I've been waiting my whole life to have a restaurant, just so I could do that."

The combo soon comes out. It's a deluxe Coney dog nestled inside a Detroit loose burger (which is crumbled ground beef as opposed to a patty) in a freshly steamed bun, smothered with chili.

"That's the Rolls-Royce of hot dogs, right there," says Binder, who is better known as a comedian and director but whose passion for Detroit-style dogs has consumed him for the last year.

He's not alone. Los Angeles is in the midst of a hot dog renaissance, with a cluster of recent openings signaling a hunger for that most sentimental of meals: tender tubular meat in a bun covered with toppings, or naked except for mustard.

Like the burger before it, and in tandem with the current German sausage craze, the hot dog has gone gourmet, with restaurants taking it seriously enough to dream up all kinds of wild combinations. In addition to the tried-and-true, like Pink's and Tommy's dogs, diners can now nosh on the Sooo Cali at Dog Haus in Pasadena, which waters mouths with mixed greens, chopped tomatoes, tempura-fried onions, house-made spicy basil aioli and avocados; or the Vegan Weena, on the new hot dog menu at North Hollywood's Federal Bar, which is a meatless dog topped with chipotle, avocado, cilantro cream and tropical fruit salsa. Then there's the Picnic Dog at Pasadena's Slaw Dogs, which tops a humble grilled dog with barbecue sauce, onion, potato salad and a crisp pickle spear.

The purists also have a seat at the beefy banquet, with places like Coney Dog, Papaya King and Hollywood's Township Kitchen Americana & Saloon paying reverent homage to Detroit, New York and Chicago-style dogs. The first two go so far as to ship in all their ingredients from Detroit and New York in order to replicate their favored dogs as closely as possible. Binder even had a bun steamer custom-made in Detroit that steams the buns from all directions so that they become as soft as marshmallows and just as mild in flavor.

The raison d'être for the recent boom, say wiener enthusiasts, is twofold, and butterflied in the same bun: economics and tradition. The recession is making diners search for value without losing flavor (see the recent food truck boom), while at the same time causing them to go gooey for the traditions of their simpler youth, which, if you were raised in America, were likely wrapped up in hot dogs at some point or another. And Los Angeles, according to the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council, is the country's No. 1 consumer of hot dogs, beating out New York City and San Antonio/Corpus Christi.

"In this economy, people want to go back to their roots and have fun," says Andre Vener, who opened Dog Haus a year ago with partners Hagop Giragossian and Quasim Riaz. The original 55-seat restaurant was such a success (seating 600 to 800 people a day) that they just opened a second location, the Dog Haus Biergarten in Old Town Pasadena, which, in addition to beer, features handcrafted cocktails and an '80s party theme. Soon they plan to open a third location in Alhambra.

At Dog Haus, as with most hot dog places, you can get a hot dog, fries or tater tots and a classic soda for less than $10. And you'll leave full. The juicy all-beef dogs come in thick, buttery-sweet King's Hawaiian rolls and are smothered with ingredients. Sauces zigzag in fat lines across the top of most, and melty cheese and onions are plentiful.

"It's not hard to sell anybody on hot dogs or hamburgers," says Giragossian. "They've got that street-food-fun vibe."

Plus kids love them, so families are as common a sight during the day and early evening as clubgoers are in the wee hours of the sodden night, says Matt Erickson, vice president of restaurant operations for SBE hospitality, which opened L.A.'s first branch of New York legend Papaya King in Hollywood and plans to open more in Los Angeles and Nevada, Arizona and Miami.

"Families will drive here from across town, park outside and relax with their tailgates down," Erickson says. The Hollywood location has no seating, which is why Drew Barrymore was spotted one night munching a Papaya King dog while sitting on a curb.

Papaya King, which first opened in New York City in 1932, is known for its slender, all-natural dogs that come in skin casings that give a satisfying snap when you bite into them. The dogs are cooked on top of a foil-covered grill, which is said to enhance the snap. The bright red-and-yellow restaurant also serves as the tongue-in-cheek secret entrance to a ritzy invite-only music venue and bar, called Sayers Club, where such artists as Prince and Perry Farrell hop onstage for impromptu performances, a situation that adds sparkle to the stand's after-hours feeding frenzy. (Papaya King sells more than 600 hot dogs a day.)

Because it's in the middle of Sunset Strip, Coney Dog also feeds long lines of hungry glitterati late at night. Binder, who opened the business with friends and fellow Detroiters Tim Allen and Sam Raimi, uses his Facebook page to advertise specials, sometimes giving coupons for a free hot dog. His Coney dogs are 80% beef, 20% pork and have a little milk in them, but nothing else.

The Coney Island dog of Binder's youth offered two choices: a hot dog with chili or a loose burger. Binder thought he might do the same thing until he realized that such a scheme wouldn't fly in wildly diverse Los Angeles.

"Todd Phillips, the director of 'The Hangover,' came in and said, 'I love your food, but why can't I get sauerkraut?'" says Binder, who resisted at first but now offers all manner of variations, including a classic bacon-wrapped L.A. dog with jalapeños.

"Hot dogs and hamburgers are all about what you did in your childhood," he says, adding that he hopes to make Coney Dog a tradition for a new generation of L.A. youth.

The same goes for the trio of men behind Dog Haus. Since the first restaurant opened, Vener and Riaz's wives have had babies, and Giragossian has married.

"This place is filled with families and kids and babies and strollers," says Vener. "Every kid that comes in here gets a free Otter Pop."

Giragossian laughs as Vener's wife appears on the biergarten patio with Vener's tiny new daughter. "We need to get Dog Haus onesies."

Dieters tend

A study shows that various hormones conspire to make us hungrier for at least another year, telling us to eat more, conserve energy and store fuel as fat.

The report, published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, helps explain why roughly 4 in 5 dieters wind up gaining back lost pounds within a year or two of losing them — and, sometimes, pack on a few extra pounds for good measure.

It is a close look at the disheartening pattern: In the wake of weight loss, "multiple compensatory mechanisms" spring to life, the study illustrates, and work together to ensure that weight loss is reversed quickly and efficiently.

The researchers, led by Joseph Proietto of the University of Melbourne's Department of Medicine, write that more than one solution to the crisis of obesity will likely be necessary: "a combination of medications" that will have to be safe for long-term use.

The study comes as the quest to develop effective medications to fight obesity has hit a long rough patch. Over the last four years, the Food and Drug Administration has rejected or sent back for further research applications for the approval of four different weight-loss drugs. And it has ordered the withdrawal of one of the prescription medications already on the market, Meridia.

In almost all cases, regulators cited the drugs' marginal effectiveness and concerns about their safety if used by a broad swath of the population over long periods.

Meanwhile, two-thirds of Americans and a growing proportion of the developing world's population are overweight or obese, and though obesity rates in the U.S. have begun to stabilize, there's been no real decline. Public health officials already fear that an entire generation of Americans will suffer poorer health and earlier deaths due to the extra pounds they carry.

The Australian study paints a "very comprehensive" and "really discouraging" picture of the breadth of the body's response to weight loss, said Dr. Daniel Bessesen, an endocrinologist and obesity researcher at University of Colorado's Denver Health Medical Center. It captures just how many resources the body musters to ensure that pounds are put back on — a long list of hormones that regulate appetite, feelings of fullness after eating and how calories are used.

The study enrolled 50 obese men and women without major health problems, and put them on a strict low-calorie diet for eight weeks. Within two weeks after subjects completed that diet, and again one year later, researchers measured blood levels of nine distinct hormones that affect appetite and metabolism, and queried each subject about his or her feelings of hunger after meals, between meals and as mealtime approached.

The challenges of weight control quickly became evident. Thirty-four of 50 enrolled subjects made it to the one-year mark. Four withdrew during the eight-week period of dieting — a rigorous 550-calorie per day regimen. Seven failed to lose 10% of their body mass, which researchers had set as a condition of continued participation.

And five withdrew during the yearlong "weight maintenance" phase, when subjects got regular counseling on a diet-and-exercise plan to help them hold steady at the new weight.

Of those who remained, the average weight loss at 10 weeks, when hormone levels were first measured, was just short of 30 pounds.

One year out, those subjects had gained back an average of just over 12 pounds. But after and between meals, their appetites — and the hormones that influence hunger — rebounded even more robustly.

With names such as leptin, ghrelin, amylin, cholescystokinin and insulin, the hormones vary widely. Some are secreted from the gut, others by the pancreas or fat cells themselves. Some dial appetite up, others send word to the brain that plenty has been consumed, and still others help regulate how calories are used.

But 52 weeks after subjects had completed their crash diets and were struggling to maintain their loss, that cacophony of hormones was sending a single message, loudly, clearly and after every meal: Eat more.

And subjects were getting that message. When asked, they said they were just as hungry as they had been upon completion of their crash diets and significantly hungrier than they had been before their diets had begun.

"The high rate of relapse after dieting is not surprising," the authors concluded.

Barbara E. Corkey, an obesity researcher at Boston University, said that although the subjects' rapid regain of weight was no shock, the authors had turned up important evidence on how distinct hormones work individually and collectively to fight weight loss.

The result, she said, could help in devising new drugs and strategies to support dieters who just want to hang on to their losses.

Del Worsham

Del Worsham can now call this a dream season, as he wrapped up the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series top-fuel national championship in dramatic fashion at the National Hot Rod Assn. Finals in Pomona.

After establishing himself as a solid favorite during the final day of qualifying on Saturday, Worsham had said, "If it is really going to be a dream season, we need to finish it off like we want to."

On Sunday, it was mission accomplished once he defeated his closest rival, Spencer Massey, in the third of four elimination-round runs on a picture-perfect day at Auto Club Raceway. And he punctuated that feat by beating Tony Schumacher for the event championship.

"Calling it a dream season doesn't come close to describing it," Worsham said. "I'm just coming down from racing and can't find the words right now. It's been unreal."

In the title-clincher against Massey, the margin of victory was .008 of a second. Worsham covered the 1,000 feet in 3.800 seconds with a top speed of 322.27 mph. Massey's numbers were 3.808 and 322.73, and he was gaining on Worsham at the finish line.

The win over Schumacher was even closer. Worsham won by .003 of a second, and that was the margin that left Schumacher winless for the year, the first time that has happened since 2001.

In funny car, Matt Hagan made up for last year's disappointment at the NHRA Finals by winning a Full Throttle national championship in only his third full season of drag racing. Hagan, driving his DieHard Dodge Charger, edged his closest rival, Don Schumacher Racing teammate Jack Beckman, in the second round of the eliminations.

Then Hagan, who lost his shot at winning a national title last year when he was upset in the first round of the eliminations, erased that memory Sunday by beating Cruz Pedregon in the third round. It was another thrilling title-clinching race. Hagan had the quicker start and faster time, 4.096 seconds to Pedregon's 4.113, and Pedregon had the better top speed, 311.77 mph to 309.34.

Worsham and Hagan, who both won $500,000 for their national championships, followed the same script. Hagan also capped off his year with an event championship. Hagan's final-round victory was over Robert Hight in a rematch of the Winternationals finals at Pomona in February. Hight won that one but couldn't catch Hagan in Sunday's event final.

Hagan's elapsed time of 4.009 was the best of this event and the third-best in funny car since the NHRA went to the 1,000-foot distance in 2008. Hight's run was almost as impressive. His top speed of 318.92 mph was the fourth-fastest ever.

Asked to describe his year, Hagan said, "It's truly amazing. I hate the phrase that you have to lose one to win one, but in this case it is sort of true."

At last year's NHRA Finals, Hagan's first-round eliminations loss led to the legendary John Force's winning his 15th national championship.

Force made it to the elimination round this year but lost the first run to Johnny Gray. In a prerace ceremony, Force was honored and the premier seating area at Auto Club Raceway was officially named the John Force Grandstand.

Pedregon, third in the funny car points standings coming into Sunday, stayed in contention by defeating Melanie Troxel in the second round of eliminations. After that race, down at the end of the racetrack, Troxel's car somehow re-fired and she ended up going through a fence and crashing into a trailer. "Fortunately, no one was hurt," said a shaken Troxel after the freak accident.

Jason Line had clinched the national championship in pro stock two weeks ago at Las Vegas. Greg Stanfield was the event winner at Pomona. In pro motorcycle, Eddie Krawiec needed to win his first two runs Sunday at Pomona to clinch the title, and he did that. But he lost to Andrew Hines in the event final.

For Worsham, 41, his top-fuel championship is the high point of a 21-year career that began at Pomona in 1990. He competed primarily in funny car through last year, though he split time between funny car and top fuel for three years in the mid-1990s. His first full season in top fuel has included eight event wins, 11 final-round appearances and seven top qualifying positions.

Worsham, who was the top-fuel points leader for most of the 22-event NHRA schedule, is a native of Southern California. He was born in Whittier, raised in San Clemente and currently lives in Chino Hills but is in the process of moving to Villa Park with his wife, Connie, and 9-year-old twin daughters.

Worsham said he is moving to be closer to his shop and his father, Chuck. Worsham drove for his father's racing team before joining Al-Anabi Racing in 2009 and then joining 2010 top-fuel champion and Al-Anabi driver Larry Dixon in that division this year. Both drive Toyota-sponsored dragsters.

Dixon was mathematically still in contention for another national championship until losing to Schumacher in the semifinals. He survived a first-round breakdown when Keith Murt red-lighted. Dixon's car went only about 100 feet down the track because of an ignition problem. Dixon jumped out of his dragster with a fist pump after he saw the lights on top of the scoreboard showed that he was the winner.

But in the end, Worsham and Hagan were the big winners.

Kendall and Kylie Jenner

It couldn't have been a sweeter 16th birthday weekend for Kendall Jenner.

Not only did the young reality star get a Range Rover to mark her big milestone at her B-day bash on Saturday, but the following night she and little sister Kylie took home the Stylish Sisters awards at the Hollywood Style Awards!
The girls were thrilled to be on the red carpet, dishing to E! News that they were excited to be honored at such a young age.

Fledgling model Kendall wore a low-cut mint blouse with sheer sleeves, a white mini and strappy silver stilettos, while 13-year-old Kylie rocked an edgy white lace blouse with an asymmetrical black skirt and black pointy-toe heels.

Keeping it all in the family, big sister Khloé Kardashian Odom was on hand to present the award to her half-siblings, natch.

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian seems to always be dealing with a few legal matters, and now she is in the middle of a little trouble.

Kim is the spokesperson for TRIA, a home laser hair-removal system, but another hair-removal company is claiming the public is being deceived, states TMZ. Radiant is reportedly claiming that Kim claims to use the product all over her body when the product can’t actually be used everywhere.

Kim also reportedly claims that you don’t need to shave anymore when the product reportedly states that you use the product along with shaving.

Also, Radiant is also reportedly upset that Kim openly states that she gets professional hair removal done so TRIA can’t be her only product.

However, it seems TRIA isn’t too afraid of the lawsuit as Kim has reportedly just signed an 18-month deal to be there spokesperson again.

Do you think TRIA will lose the lawsuit?
